Hi, I know this may sound gross, but I have been constipated for 2-3 weeks without bowel movement, so I went to see the doctor 2 days ago. the doctor prescribed me with lactulose to soften my stool, and also the laxative bisacodyl that I am required to take every night. The next day, I started having diarrhea. I noticed that my stool is pencil thin, but there’s no blood though. I know that pencil thin stool is a symptom for many cause, thus I went to get a x-ray today. The x-ray showed that there’s nothing wrong, but there is air and fecal material in the colon up to the rectum level. Being still worried, I went to check online and found out some others with the same condition as well on justanswer.com. The expert over there suggested continue taking the laxative and stool softener since the stool is impacted and it will soften over time. However I am not that sure if that will really work. Is there anyone with the same experience or knowledge that could help? Thanks.

Yes you should definitely try a fiber therapy laxative. You can pick up an entire bottle of fiber capsules for about $4. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, and eat leafy green vegetables often. That should taken care of your problem very soon. Also continue the stool softener to relieve any discomfort. After having a baby, I experienced some similar problems.

The laxatives will stimulate peristaltic contractions and the stool softeners are supposed to soften the stools. So long as you are taking these the shape and consistency of your stool is irrelevant. If it was me, I would have taken a 1 to 2 quart warm (105F) water enema that had a teaspoon of salt added per quart of water. I would have done that before waiting 2 weeks with no BM. Now that the diarrhea is passing around the impaction I would try that. Or keep doing what your doing and end up having being manually dis-impacted by some poor nurse who drew the short straw,
