blood in stool….colon cancer?

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

i went to a doctor last week because i took 2 laxatives an with cramping etc, there was bright red blood in my stool. It looked like a lot but was mixing with water from the runs so who knows how much really. But when it became solid, within a few hours,my stool was half normal an half bright red .Every time i wiped the toilet paper was bright red. I see no hemorrhoids an have never had any.I could have internal i guess although the nurse practitioner who checked me did a rectal exam an felt nothing, which doesn’t mean a lot.anyway by the next day the blood was 100% gone although now,5 days later i do feel a little constipated but even when i go i see no blood as i look it over an no blood is on the paper.i do feel some itching,up inside .
anyway the nurse practitioner i saw has made me think i most likely have colon cancer…does it sound like it? or is this lady a quack? i am having a colonoscopy Friday just to make sure but the np has me worked up pretty good.

thanks for your help

You forgot to include your age.

    A. You may have internal hemorrhoids
    B. You may have a fissure.
    C. You may have a fistula.
    D. You may have a polyp.

The doc doing the scope will find out for you.

Without having tests from an experienced doctor the N.P. had no right to scare you like this, her expertise failed her when she had no knowledge of all the problems related to a bloody stool you could have. You’d best see a doctor and next time make sure they’re qualified.

For any medical professional to tell you that you “most likely” have cancer without thorough diagnostic testing is irresponsible bordering on malpractice. This lady is a quack of the nastiest variety.

Your symptoms could be multiple things, many of which are easily treatable and harmless, but I wouldn’t even dare guess without real diagnostic tests. Good luck on the colonscopy.

It sounds more like a hemoroid than cancer, usually with cancer you would have a history of dark black stools. But to be safe you are 40 have your doctor give you a colon cancer check up. It’s not that bad they will give you drugs to make you sleep and boom before you know you will have done your body and soul a great favour. I hope and pray your okay but please get checked. Good luck..!

Cancer results in “black” blood in the stool, not bright red blood…think about it, only very fresh blood is bright red…

Most likely you have piles or fissures or fistules.

See your doctor, and avoid that Nurse Practioner in the future!

Well, first things first. One time I went into see my doctor and the nurse was the only one available. I showed her a spot on my face and she exclaimed “That looks like basil cell carcinoma”. I cried the whole way home. I went to a dermatologist and he laughed at me and told me “If I tell you good news, will you do something good for someone else today?” He used a tool to cut it open and told me it was nothing but a deep whitehead that never surfaced and that I had to keep my promise.

All of that to say, that without tests, a NP cannot tell you that you have cancer by mere symptoms. You might want to see a gastroenterologist to have a colonoscopy done and some blood tests to rule out anything serious but I’ve had blood in my stool from constipation and my colonoscopy was fine.

Good luck. Deep breath. I know you’re scared but just see your doctor, get a referral to a gastroenterologist, get a colonoscopy and get some peace of mind. You can totally wig yourself out over something you cannot do anything about at this very moment. I do it a lot to myself and I have to remind myself that stressing myself out over something won’t fix it and it’s better to take a deep breath, get some sleep, and then do something productive to fix it in the morning.

Hope that didn’t sound too preachy, I just know how it feels to be anxious about something. I’m seeing a specialist next week and I’m scared too (for a good cause) but I know that losing sleep over it won’t fix it.

    Hugs!!!
