Ever since my son was 14 months old he has had a lot of problems with his bowel movements. They were too big and too hard. At first they told me it was his dairy intake and I needed to cut back his milk, cheese, etc. So I did and he continued to have these problems so they prescribed him a laxative to see if that helped. I took him to a gastro doctor and he said that he had and “oversized colon” and that he would eventually grow into it. So he continued his laxative prescription and told me to give him mineral oil and about a year later we went back and the doctor had said that his colon was the perfect size, but he was afraid to let it out. The doctor told me that there was nothing they could do about that because it was all up to him to decide that it wouldn’t hurt to let it out anymore. SOOO, after all that .. my son is now 3 and he is STILL holding his bowel movements in because he is afraid it is going to hurt. What can I do to help him relax and just let it out?

make sure he has plenty to drink. maybe feed him a single dried prune daily. My 30 month old son likes sunsweet ones. also try putting a little bit of vaseline on his little butt crack to help the poop slide out. if this doesn’t work talk to the doctor about giving him a stool softener for a short time. this will make his poop softer and easier to pass.

Give him plenty of fruit and veg and give him plenty of fluids like water or juice but not milk as this can clog some people up-there is also an argument that bananas can clog you up depending on what health professinal you speak to-also,have you tried something like Lactulose that doesn’t make you go to the toilet,it justs softens the faeces, you need to drink plenty of water as your faeces draws in all the liquids from your body the longer it stays in there-explain that there is nothing to be frightened of and that once he has had a poo he will feel a lot better and it won’t hurt as much the next time because the longer he holds it in the harder the poo will get-my daughters poo gets stuck half way out of her bum(rarely) because it is large and hard and I have Glycerin suppostries that I have to insert into her anus-a few minutes after inserting one of these, her poo is soft and she is pain free-she was born with no anus and had an op to correct this when she was 1 day old-she has been on Lactulose ever since, she is 4 now and has a fantastic understanding of it-hope this helps

I have a 3yr. old daughter and I went through the same thing. She was so afraid to have a bowel movement and did not want it to hurt anymore. She would start to cry and hop around because she had to go. I took her into the bathroom and put her on the potty. I gave my daughter her favorite toy and told her as many times as I needed to that the medicine made it all better and it is okay to push it out. I even sometimes had to hold her hand so she would go. After so many times of doing this she was okay. Now she knows that it does not hurt anymore and she can go potty like a big girl without my help.
